Getting around to Blogging.

by Mark Robson
May 7, 2009

As I sit with the page proofs of Aurora in front of me, it seems amazing that it’s been months since I last posted anything here. I guess much of that has to do with the Trapped By Monsters blog that the creatures in my cave are forcing me to add to on a regular basis. Added to this, however, has been:

a. The frantic finish and editing of the final book in the Dragon Orb series.

b. The chill-out, relax in my spare time, don’t want anything much to do with books and writing period that inevitably follows the end of a major project.

c. The fact that I fell into a time warp and have just emerged from it dazed and disoriented wondering where the past 3 months went!

I do hope to start putting stuff up here again more regularly now. I hope to have news on potential new projects soon. In the meantime I’m hoping that folk are enjoying the Dragon Orb books.

  3. Hello Nikita and Maxine – welcome to my blog. Thanks for your messages. Nikita, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to FCC. You were a great audience to speak to. My next book, Dragon Orb: Aurora, is released on 3rd August.

Maxine – I had an excellent time today, creating characters with you and your classmates. I look forwards very much to returning to your school and seeing what you have written in a few weeks. Have fun with your writing.

  5. I’ll be back in the third week of June, I think. The teachers will know for definite, but I’m pretty certain it will be on 22nd June.

You can tell your teacher if you like. You could even show her your posts on my blog. :-)

  6. ok
if i put the name maxine rodman in a book what would you think i am rich or poor?

    Comment by maxine — May 9, 2009 @ 9:11 pm

  7. Interesting, Maxine. Your name could be either. When I think of Maxine, I think of someone who is quite wealthy, but the surname Rodman made me think initially of chimney sweeps! I just had a quick look online and it turns out that a Rodman was a surveyor’s assistant, which seems a more likely root of the name. If your story is modern, then there is no reason why the name could not belong to either rich or poor, but given the root of the family name, I’d say it would fit best with a character who was neither – more middle class.

  8. Hi,
Just wondering, but how do you get your ideas. Where do they come from? Do you have any tips, not for writing but for getting ideas. Or perhaps do they just come from you.
    Please help.

  9. Hi Dan.

I get ideas from all over the place. Normally an idea will be very vague and niggle at me for a while before I can make any sense of it. The idea for the Dragon Orb series came from an argument. I said that dragons had been overdone – the person I was arguing that dragons could never be overdone. Her internet name was Dawn Dragon. Her name sparked a little idea for a story about a dawn dragon … and a day dragon, a night dragon and a dusk dragon.

I think it’s all about opening your mind being ready to latch on to one little thing that you can then mess about with and allow to grow.

    I hope that makes sense.
