What I’m reading - 2

Here’s the latest batch of books that I’m working through. The first, ‘City of Flowers’, is the last in the wonderful Stravaganza trilogy by Mary Hoffman. I’ve made a start on it, but not got far yet despite being very keen to know what happens next. Mary’s writing voice is one of the most compelling I’ve discovered during recent years. I love the blend of detail and characterisation that she weilds with such ease. It makes for a spellbinding read. I’m very glad to hear that she’s been contracted for a second trilogy in this series, as it has been one of the most fascinating takes on fantasy writing that I’ve come across in years.
I’m feeling a little guilty for not having got around to the second and third titles in my current reading pile. Both have been awaiting my attention for a little while. Again, it’s not for lack of enthusiasm that I’ve not got around to reading them, purely a lack of reading time. ‘A Dark Sacrifice’ by Madeline Howard (real name Teresa Edgerton) promises to be a fantastic read. If the first part of this trilogy ‘The Hidden Stars’ was anything to go by, then I’ve been delaying a real treat of a read. Teresa writes big scale fantasy of almost biblical proportions. I’ve been impressed with all of her writing to date, so I’m looking forwards very much to getting stuck into this second volume … and what a great cover!
‘The Black Tattoo’ has also been on my list for some time now. I’m due to take part in a double signing event with Sam Enthoven in April. We will be appearing together in Waterstones bookstore, Guildford, on the first Saturday in April. I believe this was his first title, though the sequel, ‘Tim: Defender of the Earth’, has now launched as well. I’ve heard lots of good things about Sam’s writing. His newly released novel has just been shortlisted for the Waterstones Prize, which says a lot. The comment on the back from Neil Gaimon with the little footnote at the bottom made me smile. He said “Vomiting bats? I’m sold!’ The footnote then adds: Neil Gaiman has specifically asked us to point out that he has not actually read ‘The Black Tattoo’ yet. Well it made me smile!
Darren Shan also finally makes it onto my reading list with ‘Cirque du Freak’ - I know, I know, it’s long overdue. He’s so popular that I just have to know what on earth he’s doing to gain such a vast and avid readership. I look forwards to being wowed!
