Cat Chaos!

by Mark Robson
October 26, 2007

An appropriate title having recently acquired two young cats that are running riot through the house. I had said that I didn’t want cats again after having had two black cats for a considerable number of years after my wife and I first got married. Sadly, they both died (at a goodly age for cats) leaving my good lady wife devastated. She was so upset at their passing that I swore we would not have animals again to prevent further trauma. Then along came children …

For eight years I resisted pets (with the exception of goldfish) but was recently nagged into considering cats again. I made a deal with my daughter that if she completed ten tasks within a certain time span we would get two cats as family pets. Darn it! She was just too dedicated to the idea! One of the tasks was to write a cat story. I will publish it here as I actually think it was a very good effort, and I believe people might actually appreciate her little cat story. The result of her efforts - we obtained Patch and Jules (though my daughter insists on spelling the name Jewels, which is quite sweet.) Here’s Patch, looking like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth:

And my daughter’s story…

Cat Chaos

Once upon a Tuesday Kitara and Twyler were scampering across the meadow as fast as they could.
‘Come on,Twyler! He’s coming. Run!’
‘Whose idea was it to take the short cut?’ grumbled Twyler.
‘Never mind whose idea it was. Just run!’
It was Growler. He was coming, and he was coming fast. He was really mad. He didn’t like cats on his land. The two cats ran as fast as they could, but it was no good. Growler was catching them up.
‘Quick! Up this tree,’ said Kitara.
The two cats scrambled up the tree, climbing higher and higher all the way to the top. Growler stood near the trunk of the tree barking his head off.
‘Great plan, Kitara!’ said Twyler. ‘Now what do we do?’
‘Now we wait,’ said Kitara. ‘And when Growler has gone I think we’ll pay a little visit to Leo. It’s time we taught that dog a lesson.’
So they waited and waited until Growler got bored and walked away. When he had gone, the two cats snuck down and went to see their friend Leo.
The next day Kitara and Twyler went back to Growler’s house.
‘What’s the matter Growler? Cat got your tongue? What are you? Dumb, dumb, dumb!’ they chanted. ‘Leo’s going to sort you out.’
Growler was so angry he wanted to rip them to pieces. He shot out of his kennel like a bullet, and chased them down the street and across the meadow. What he didn’t know was this was all part of their plan.
The cats ran behind some bushes and Growler followed. The dog was in for a big surprise. Leo was waiting!
Growler skidded to a stop. Leo was HUGE! He had big yellow eyes, a golden mane and long scary teeth. He roared and Growler ran for his life.
The two cats laughed.
‘Thanks, Leo,’ they said.
‘That’s OK, little cousins, but I have to get back to the zoo now before I get in trouble.’
Kitara and Twyler were never chased by Growler again.

The End.

  1. How old is she now? That is a very good story for a young person to write, what dedication! And the way she has incoporated the cat-lion family relation is very good.

I have to say i dislike cats…they curl up to sleep on you, pinning you to the seat you are sitting in and if you get up it will claw you, and cat food is horrid.

  2. She was still 7 when she wrote this. I’ll admit to giving her a little bit of guidance to keep her on track in the middle, or she would likely have speared off and written a novel!! However, her instinct for sentence structure, use of dialogue and story progression is pretty formidable for one so young … says the proud father. :-)

  7. Lovely to see you visiting my website, Anais. I hope you are having a great time now that you’re back home in France. I’m pleased to see that you have been enjoying my books - thanks for letting me know. It means a lot to me every time someone says they have appreciated my writing. It takes a lot of work to finish a story and get it good enough for publication, so it is always a special thing to hear that all that work has been worthwhile.

We miss your visits as well. Maybe you will come and visit us again some day. We would be delighted to see you if you decide to come back to England.
