Where I write … part 1!

Let me first say that I don’t write well in the mornings. It takes quite some time for my brain to get going and I don’t seem to begin firing on all cylinders until after lunchtime. However, that does not stop me trying. When I first moved to Daventry I tried to write in my lovely study which is full of books and has a great view of fields and trees that should be inspirational. Unfortunately these things proved more of a distraction than a help, so I moved … to the dining room. This drove my wife nuts! My papers and computer littered the dining table every day for around a year. Although I found it better than the study for focusing on the story, in the end I realised there were still too many distractions with writing at home … so I moved again.
When I do write in the mornings, I now do so here:
The Bishops Tea Room cafe in Daventry is lovely. They serve great tea and coffee, and the most delicious caramel shortbread ever. I think they make it just for me! I normally use the corner table and tap away on my laptop quietly for a couple of hours. I find the process of going to work changes my mindset and helps me to focus far better than I do at home. I can block out the noise around me easily, but when I’m at home I find it impossible to block out the housework that needs doing, or the garden that needs mowing. Much of the editing of Imperial Traitor was done at this table:
And quite a bit of Dragon Oracle was written here too. So now you know where I hang out in the mornings. Soon I’ll let you in on where I work in the afternoons!
