The Kids’ Lit Quiz World Final - Part 1

Oxford, 9th July 2007 - a day I’ll remember for a long time. The thing I will probably remember more than anything else was the most impressive depth of knowledge displayed by the teams involved in the Kids’ Lit Quiz final. Answering very difficult questions on everything from nursery rhymes to ancient myths, and authors to the opening lines of books, the teams demonstrated a breathtaking breadth of knowledge right across the spectrum of childrens’ literature.
And the winning team were … Northern Ireland. They may have been narrowly beaten into second place at the UK final, but they certainly gained their revenge at the World Final, where they romped home in the final round to beat New Zealand into second, leaving the team from Aylesbury High School to follow up in a most respectable third place. All of the teams were impressive in their enthusiasm and knowledge, some being narrowly beaten to the buzzer on several occasions. China stood out as serious contenders for much of the contest and Scotland and Wales both accrued creditable scores, with the South African team left a little in their wake. I managed to get a picture of myself with the winning team - most worthy champions for 2007.

Did you know that the Kids’ Lit Quiz originated in New Zealand where Quizmaster Wayne Mills began the competition many years ago? The New Zealand final, and the World Final last year, is held at the Storylines Festival of New Zealand Children’s Writers and Illustrators (see festival info at http://www.storylines.org.nz), held in June every year. We’re very proud of Wayne, and the quiz (and our New Zealand team!)and how the quiz has spread across the world.

Yes, Crissi, I was aware that the KLQ originated in New Zealand. Wayne is a star and you’re quite right to be proud of him. He’s doing fantastic work for children all over the world. Having been to many of the events in the UK, I feel sure that it will continue to spread around the world. Wayne continues to have an expanding vision for the Quiz, though I think he’s going to have to clone himself if he’s to continue to be quizmaster at every regional and national event!
